Philosophy

Adulthood is around the corner.  That means it’s time to start living on your own, right?  Oh, how wrong you are!  People who become successful do so with strong connections to people and resources.  They actively search for help!  Throughout this class, throughout high school, and throughout your adult life, do not be afraid to ask for help toward forming relationships and accomplishing achievements.

General Course Information

Utilizing an edition of Glencoe Algebra 1 as well as a geometry unit, students will be challenged to develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking and creative problem solving.  Students will study concepts in the following units:  Relationships between Quantities, Linear Relationships, Angle Relationships, Parallel Lines, and the Pythagorean Theorem.

Homework Policy-We will use two different homework policies during the year.

During the 1st Semester, each assignment is worth 4 points; you will get ALL the points only if every problem is attempted.  I will assess each assignment for the quality of work.  Work must be present next to your answers, so that any mistakes or errors can be identified and corrected.  I will not accept the excuse that my work is on another piece of paper.

1.      An incomplete or missing assignment will follow the point system below.  Depending on the complexity of an assignment I may allow an extra day to finish if I feel the initial effort was there.

4 points—Every problem was attempted and work was shown where needed

3 points—1 or 2 problems was not attempted or done to completion

2 points—Approximately half of the assignment was completed

1 point—Assignment was only initially started

0 points—Assignment was missing or not started

2.      Late assignments will only be accepted one day late.  An assignment turned in one day late will receive half credit if the assignment was completed.  Any work turned in more than one day late will receive a zero.

During the 2nd Semester, each assignment is worth 2 points; you will get ALL the points only if every problem is attempted.

2 points—Every problem was attempted and work was shown where needed

1 point—Up to 25% of the assignment was not attempted

0 points—More than 25% of the assignment was not attempted

2.      Late assignments will not be accepted!

Homework Policy continued:

You can still earn the points for the assignment if you were absent the day it was assigned.  This absence must be excused.  You have two days for each day you were absent.   If you were absent the day an assignment was turned in, you will be expected to have it completed upon your return.  It is your responsibility to present the assignment to me at the beginning of class.

If you disagree with the points I gave you on an assignment, please take the time to discuss it with me at the end of class.  I will not allow for change in homework scores after the due date.

       Student Writing

Chapter Summary with Cornell Notes

Students will use the Cornell note method to summarize the material learned throughout each chapter.  These summaries will be saved throughout the year and used as study guides for the local assessments.  There will be one set of Cornell Notes worth 9 points each per chapter.

STUDENT NOTE-TAKING GUIDES-STUDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A NOTE-TAKING BOOLKET THAT WILL BE USED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.  THE REPLACEMENT COST WILL BE $5.00.  STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO HAVE THEIR NOTE-TAKING BOOKLETS EVERY DAY.

What if I am absent from school?

1.      Pre planned absent days does not excuse you from having the work done for class.  If you know you are going to be gone, take the initiative to see me.  You will need to make an attempt to get the work done ahead of time.  Your willingness to plan ahead goes along way.  This includes absences due to extracurricular activities.

2.      Unexcused absences must be cleared within 2 school days.  Any work that was missed        due to an unexcused absence will receive a zero.  Even if the student completed the work before the 2 days.

3.      You will be expected to get notes from a classmate for any days that you missed. These notes will be used for studying purposes and extra credit problems.  Also, the notes will contain problems that are very similar to your homework and tests.

How will I be graded?

1.      One chapter test will be given at the end of the chapter.  Approximately 40 to 50 points.

PENCILS ONLY—TESTS DONE IN PEN WILL BE SCORED WITH A ZERO OR YOU MAY RETAKE A DIFFERENT VERSION IN PENCIL ON YOU OWN TIME.

2.      Two or three quizzes will be given per chapter.   Approximately 15 to 20 points each.

PENCILS ONLY—QUIZZES DONE IN PEN WILL BE SCORED WITH A ZERO OR YOU MAY RETAKE A DIFFERENT VERSION IN PENCIL ON YOU OWN TIME.  Students will be able to retake quizzes.  Students must retake the quizzes before the chapter test.  Students must demonstrate their understanding of the material before taking the retake.

3.      Each homework assignment is worth 4 points.  If there are 8 assignments in a given chapter, your homework will be worth 32 points.  Homework cannot be done in pen.  Erasable pens are NOT ALLOWED!
