Course Information - 2D Painting Level 1

What will you learn in this course?  This course will include the study of acrylic and oil painting technique.  Using direct observation of still life displays and prints or photos for subject matter, students will experiment with color mixing and application.  Students will learn to develop compositions while learning methods to create space within a painting.

No one sees things the same way or creates exactly the same.  This course will allow the student artist to experiment with different painting techniques and determine which mediums, tools and design styles work best for them.  I believe the best way to learn to paint is by painting.  Together we will explore the use of perspective/sighting, color, composition, realism and abstract design.  We will create analytically and expressively. We will include art history in our learning.  We will research the works of famous artists and determine what styles and methods we can use to enhance our skills as painters.  It will be a fun journey!

Intermediate Drawing and Painting - Course Information

This course is for students who have completed Drawing 2 or Painting 2.  In this course students will explore and build upon the many creative aspects of drawing and painting together in one class.  Intermediate Drawing and Painting will build upon the concepts and principles set in Basic Drawing and Painting and Drawing and Painting 2 courses.

Drawing and painting in this course is done from real-life observation and photo reference.   Students will be asked to create weekly sketchbook assignments in addition to their- in class project work.   Students will be expected to know their vocabulary and use it correctly in written assignments.  Most learning will occur through the actual creation of art projects.

Why this course is important:  This class will help the student artist develop observational and problem solving skills, encourage creative thinking, help develop independent work skills and a continued appreciation of drawing and painting.  Observational problem solving and organizational skills are also developed.  Continuing to use good drawing skills like linear perspective and sighting in more complicated applications will be key to producing advanced compositions in this class.  Students will continue to explore acrylic and oil mediums and will be introduced to the art of watercolor painting.  Students will also explore other drawing mediums including, but not limited to, oil pastels, charcoal, conte crayons, colored pencils, brush pens and pen and ink.  The course will focus on the student’s ability to be original and creative in their compositions.  Most of the learning in this class will be from the actual creation of art projects.  The ability to incorporate a variety of styles and techniques into their own original work will be key to success in this class.

We will include art history in our learning.  We’ll study the works of famous artists and determine what styles and methods we can use to enhance our drawing skills.  It will be a fun journey!
